A young Lutheran pastor compares Shakespeare to Christ in his sermons, aiming for a permanent end to atheism through satire. When his work draws the attention of famed actress Charlotte Cushman, instead, he accidentally casts doubt upon the world’s greatest dramatist. His crisis of confidence leads to a crisis of faith… and a reckoning with the true meaning of Shakespeare.
